Hatton / Mayweather

Postby Boss on Sun Aug 19, 2007 4:38 pm

Seems Ricky Hatton has gotten himself a matchup in December with Mayweather.

I personally don't have Satellite TV, so I can't watch his fights, but I am well aware of him and his exploits, and it seems his last fight in Vega, against Castillo illicited a very good response from American observers.

So it will be be interesting this time, to see if the apparently brash Floyd Mayweather can live up to what appears to be mostly his own hype. I don'ty know a lot about him, but that's how he seems to come across.

Of course I'm hoping that Hatton will win, but obviously it's early days, but never the less, this could potentially be the biggest boxing fight of the year.

What makes you doubt Mayweathers boxing credentials?

well in my opinion hes just doesnt belong where he is at, I think hes not a good boxer, hes sloppy, hes not verry well rounded and hes cocky i think hes gotten lucky so far. For example the Delahoya-Mayweather bout Mayweather did not do well Delahoya just had a terrible fight he was not at prime.(im not a delahoya fan, just an ex.)

Interesting standpoint. I agree, Mayweather does seem very cocky, going by the things that have been said. Good to hear the viwopoint of someone who has more intimate knowledge of such a fighter, as in Britain, he's not as well known about, because he isn't a home grown talent, or someone often training / boxing in this country.

Well i used to box so im into combat sports, cocky fighters even when they do make it to the top they never seem to last and are always the ones with the least sportsmanship. You cant go into a fight thinking that you are going to loose cause if you do you will but its never good to be overconfident, confidence is good but too much of anything is bad.

Same kind of thing that happened last year. I don't know if you saw a fight a between Joe Calzaghe and and American, Jeff Lacey, but Calzaghe at the time was 40+ fights unbeaten, and I think was fghting his tenth world title defense.

Lacey when he was followed around that week, talked about Calzaghe, by saying he fought Bums, he was a slapper, he didn't hit properly, he couldn't beat Lacey. The guy was slating, but going too far.

Calzaghe didn't know abotu this, but Lacey was too brash, and in the fight it kind of went like this.

Round 1: Lacey Nose Bleed

Round 4: Lacey Nose Bleed, and a cut above both eyes.

Last Round Lacey knocked down first time ever. He got straight back up, but he looked like crap.

His team said that was the best fight they'd ever seen from a Brit outside of Britain, and he gave their fighter a heck of a mauling basically.

There are occasions where cockeyness does pay off unfortunately, as demonstrated in about 1983, when John Conte fought a guy from I think Paraguay, and the guy said some terrible things about Contes family, (don't know what they were), and Conte went in the ring like a man possessed and lost his cool and technique.

yes cockyness does work sometimes.
boxing is more mental than it is physical, just like many other things if you kno what you are doing and can be calm and focus it you will get it done right. Alot of boxing is just keeping that mental state. Talking crap does work sometimes, but only on boxers that cant keep their cool they let it get to them and once the fight comes around they are to focused on trying to hurt the other guy instead of fighting the fight. Ive used that tactic before it works well sometimes specially on rookies or verry agressive fighters. In my opinion the best kind of boxer is an agressive fighter that can keep their cool, because they will overwelm you but they know exactly what they are doing the whole time, so most of the time you cant get that hit in that you would tipically be able to get in. Cockyness does work sometimes utill you get to a certain calibur fighter, then i wont do you any good.

Being from England I hope to see Hatton win the fight. He is a good fighter, he keeps his head down and works on the prize.

Like you say, Mayweather is a cockey guy, but he is a good technical fighter, and knows when to hit. I saw the fight with him and De La Hoya, and i must say, Oscar did more than enough to beat Mayweather, and I thought it was an unfortunate decision.

Hatton's downfall in the years has been his training leading up to a fight. He has never really stripped down to a lean fighter, which results in a lot of cuts and bruises in fights. His face after fights show this, but against Castillo he looked much better and more professional, and if he keeps up the determination he has a good chance.

Mayweather will go into the fight as favourite im sure, as he has the natural weight, but Hatton is a good boxer, and will slug it out against anybody. I really hope he wins.

I live here in Las Vegas , that was a good fight.
I think it has ended Hatton as a real fighter here in the US.

Possible, but with time he could come back to his best, as he's still pretty much there, and a return fight has never been totally ruled out so I believe.

It’s kinda embarrassing how Hatton lost to Manny Pacquiao the 2nd round…right? Can’t wait for Mayweather and Pacquiao … wonder who will win? Although Mayweather was recently retired and back so soon?

Hatton and Mayweather is not completely off the cards I don't think. It's been talked about in dispatches so to speak, but whether it would ever happen again, I don't know.

Pacquiao was a bad result for Hatton. Not heard of a Pacquiao Mayweather fight. Wouldn't like to speculate on who would win that, as it could possibly be a draw.

There may even be the chance of a Pacquiao Hatton rematch, which wouldn't be totally out of the question.

Ity's probably one of those suck it and see things.
